A Fantastic Paradise in Central America

I was fortunate enough to stay at both AST locations on a recent trip to El Salvador. While each spot offered a very different surfing experience, the comfort, safety and tranquil ambiance of the amenities were consistent across the board. 

Las Flores is in a more remote part of the country with access via boat to many different right breaking points beyond the epic break directly below the property. As an intermediate surfer with limited experience of such conditions I was nervous initially but my hosts were patient with me and encouraged me to extend myself past my comfort zone. I am grateful that they guided me into those new experiences, they were expansive and exhilarating. The other guests at the hotel were an international mix of laid back surfers. Between sessions most people enjoyed social time together over delicious meals and smoothies taking in the perfect views of “ …. “ from the dining area and sharing information about their lives and adventures. I spent most of my down time drinking delicious coffee in one of the many shaded hammocks bordering the patio. The clean, private and spacious rooms offer an air conditioned retreat for those too tired and sun saturated moments. 

The La Libertad location sits on the edge of a crumbly little city and looks out at Punta Roca, one of the best know point breaks in the country with La Paz point breaking softer directly in front of the hotel! Nearby there is a local market and some restaurants serving up local cuisine and customs. This location offers a wider breadth of experience in and out of the water. Besides the breaks in front of the resort there are several more nearby including a beach break. Additionally there is the city for exploring and a breathtaking waterfall hike is accessible from this location. 

From the staff at the hotels to the vendors in the street, the local people I met in El Salvador were warm welcoming and respectful towards foreigners. Overall, my experience in El Salvador was expansive and inspiring. The local people, the food and the waves are all worth revisiting.
